Looking Out For Others: Mental Health First Aid Resource Guide

For anyone experiencing a mental health challenge, there is hope. There is a community of people and helpful resources to help you and your loved ones navigate mental health struggles - to overcome any stigma, isolation, or demographic situation. Whether you are working to navigate mental illness or if you have experienced painful relationships, abuse, or trauma, there are caring individuals who are sincere in wanting to help you, pray over you, and give you the encouragement and support you need to feel whole.

In this article, you will get some ideas to better identify and help others who may be dealing with a mental health struggle.   • Early warning signs of a mental health challenge or substance abuse:

    • changes in appearance, showing up late or ghosting, unable to focus, loss of interest in hobbies or activities that usually bring joy

  • Worsening signs of mental health or substance abuse disorder:

    • socially withdrawn, highly agitated or worried, neglectful of hygiene or responsibilities, erratic behavior, self-blame

  • Signs of a mental health or substance abuse crisis situation:

    • reckless behavior, thoughts of harm, feeling trapped, hopelessness, delusional thinking, hallucinations, intoxication

  • ALGEE action plan

    • Approach gently and assess for risk of suicide or harm, then assist

    • Listen nonjudgmentally

    • Give reassurance and information

    • Encourage appropriate professional help

    • Encourage self-help and other support strategies

  • Ask the hard questions:

    • “Are you considering harming or killing yourself (or others)?”

    • “Have you thought about how you would do it?”
